Marvel Pays Homage To Hip-Hop With Variant Covers

Posted by | Design, Illustration, Music | No Comments

I’m the biggest Hip-Hop fan on the planet. I’m an even bigger fan of comics. Marvel has gone on to honor and pay tribute to the culture by creating variant covers of some classic Hip-Hop albums. I am told that there are to be 50 variants in total. Now, all of this is not met with celebration. Some have protested, noting that Marvel has no black writers and instead of paying homage to the Hip-Hop culture, are in fact appropriating and cashing in on it. I can’t argue with the sentiment. That being said, I’m not offended by Marvels attempt, either. You know how little kids go crazy over trying to catch all 150 of the Pokemon balls? Yea, this’ll be that. I’m a fan and I gotta do what I gotta do. Shut up and take my money!

While some variants are due out this October, others will be available later in the fall. Not all the artwork for the covers have been released as of yet, but here are the variants I have my eyes on right now:

The Amazing Spider-Man #2 variant cover by Mike Del Mundo (A Tribe Called Quest, “Midnight Marauders”)

Astonishing ANT MAN: Ready To Shrink #1 variant by Mark Brooks (Notorious B.I.G “Ready To Die”)

Howard The Duck #2 variant cover by Mahmud Asrar. Deadpool #45 variant by Skottie Young (El-P & Killer Mike, “Run The Jewels”)

Howard the Duck #1- Hip-Hop variant by Juan Doe (Ol’ Dirty Bastard “Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version)

Squadron Supreme #1 variant cover by Mike Del Mundo ( WuTang, “Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers”)

All New Wolverine #1 variant cover by Keron Grant (DMX, “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood”)
– this has to be the SICKEST one I’ve seen thus far. WOWEY!!

Marvel Extraordinary X-Men #1 variant Sanford Green (De La Soul “3 Feet High and Rising”)

Spider-Man & Deadpool #1 variant cover by Dave Johnson (Eric B. & Rakim, “Paid In Full”)

Sam Wilson, Captain America variant cover by Mahmud Asrar (A$AP Rocky “Long.Live.A$AP)
– Not a fan of A$AP Rocky but I still copped it. It’s Captain America.

Star-Lord #1 variant cover by Tradd Moore (IVORY “100’s”)
